La battaglia di Caporetto è diventata simbolo di disfatta nel linguaggio comune: la principale sconfitta dell'esercito italiano nella storia causò migliaia di morti, decine di migliaia di feriti, oltre a una quantità incredibile di prigionieri e sfollati.

Il disastro fu l'effetto della mancanza di un piano strategico dei vertici militari, le cui conseguenze furono gravose: la ritirata, la pesante occupazione del Friuli e del Veneto e la violenza sulle donne, l'esodo della popolazione locale, il grave problema dei prigionieri italiani lasciati a morire nei lager dell'impero, il rientro in patria dei superstiti e l'ostruzionismo nei loro confronti, il doloroso recupero delle salme. «I soldati hanno mollato» si sostenne al comando vedendo la falla aperta e la disfatta profilarsi. Cadorna telegrafò al ministro della Guerra affibbiando la responsabilità della sconfitta a «dieci reggimenti arresisi senza combattere». Ma non era vero: con pesanti sacrifici umani molti soldati resistettero, permettendo ad altri la ritirata. Al di là dei nomi dei reparti, si trattava di uomini in carne e ossa, giovani e meno giovani, persone sposate o piene di sogni, che lasciarono la loro vita sul terreno di battaglia per salvarne altre.

In occasione del centenario della battaglia di Caporetto, Arrigo Petacco e Marco Ferrari raccontano in un saggio storico, che è anche un inedito reportage sui luoghi dello scontro, l'assurdità dell'atteggiamento italiano, gli errori degli alti comandi, la disumana vita di trincea, il massacro di migliaia di contadini analfabeti, le esecuzioni sommarie della nostra truppa e la disordinata e scomposta rotta.

E ci spiegano che Caporetto non esiste, è solo un'invenzione italiana durata qualche decennio. La Caporetto finita nei libri di storia si chiama in realtà Kobarid e lì un esercito di collezionisti ancora oggi estrae dalle trincee e dalle caverne il materiale usato dai soldati sui due fronti. La cittadina slovena è infatti ricca di piccoli musei, collezioni private, le trincee sono state recuperate, i viaggi nella memoria di discendenti di soldati sono costanti. Riemergono così in tutta la loro drammaticità storie individuali e collettive di una guerra che ancora parla, e si presenta con le sue atrocità.
